Well it is a New Year, so with the help my son, Mathew (who by the way, is a wiz with all things Digital) I have decided to create this Blog, which I intend to use as means to cover the wargames that my friends and I play in the distant future.

The main antagonist will be the Venetians and the Spanish. If you remember from my early report the Venetians are based at Pesaro. Scott will have his army set up first and will chose the terrain. This is because the Venetians have been in the City and its environs for some time, so it stands to reason that they will take advantage of the terrain. So on the day the Spanish may have a problem on their hands.
I will post details of the battle some time next week end and hopefully have some photographs to accompany the script. So until then "Happy Gaming"RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4046491871051396918.post-85336945088006341122010-02-26T15:35:00.004+10:002010-04-04T06:17:27.294+10:00Sunday 21 Feb. 2010 Zulu Colonial Game
Last Sunday Russ, Warren and I played an interesting Zulu game. Russ put together the Scenario using "The Sword and the Flame Rules" by Larry V. Brom. Russ and Warren played the Zulus while I was in command of the British. The object of the game was for the British to get their gun from the base line onto the hill, top left hand corner in the photograph. Fire off two rounds into the Zulu Kral, then make it back to the base line. After some difficulties the British would have achieved their objective, only the British did not get back to the base line, due to the gamers calling it a win for the British and running out of time. Here are some photos of the game (should you wish to enlarge them, I am afraid you will find that they are somewhat blurry, sorry about that). Slide 1, shows a British platoon under attack by two Zulu Regiments. This platoon decided to rush ahead, paying no attention to the surrounding terrain, that could hold hidden Zulus After putting up a brave fight the platoon was pushed back. If you look closely you can see Lord Chelmsford peering through his scope. The platoon did rally and come back into the game. Much to the relieve of the British commander. The lesson is "Always stay in support and don't run ahead".

Two scouts run into a Zulu regiment armed with rifles. This particular regiment inflicted some heavy casualties on a British square later in the game. With some very good dice throwing by Warren.

Another view of the lone platoon that ran ahead of the rest of the British units. One figure in this platoon won a posthumous Victoria Cross for valour in the field, I intent to paint a little "Gold" mark on the figure to represent the V.C.

Two slides of Lord Chelmsford with the platoon. This platoon gave support to the platoon in the centre that had to retreat. The gun was limbered and moved back. You may ask "Why didn't the Zulus attack the gun" my reply is "I do not know".

Final slide, shows the British under attack from the front and rear by two BRAVE Zulu Regiments. The Zulu regiment attacking in the rear were also hit in from behind by a British platoon. You can see the gun and its crew, taken in the flank by Zulus. The Kral was at the foot of this hill. Russ had some very bad dice rolls in this combat. Rolling I believe seven ones! The figures faced down represent wounded. After this combat, we called it a win for the British , the Zulus would have found it difficult in stopping the British from achieving their objective.
This the second time that Russ and I have played these rules and each time we have found the rules to be a joy to play and to those who think that it was an easy victory for the British, let me say "That it was not a walk over for me".
Terrain was put together by Russ.
Our next game will be a World War 1 scenario "Battle for the Conde Canal" 1914, where units from the British 2nd Corps faced the German "Steam Roller". So why not dust off those history books and brush up on this battle.RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4046491871051396918.post-88557264910871368572010-02-04T19:37:00.007+10:002010-02-05T12:50:17.783+10:00First Photos of Our Italian War Campaign.(editor's note: images link-out to reveal full-size, correctly oriented pictures)

Photo of the Map of Italy during the initial opening moves. France plunders Naples. Venetians Falter at FerraraThis is the lastest update of the Campaign. The French King, Charles VIII played campaign Card #2, collecting 9 florins in Italian Revenue. This he needed as their war Chest is somewhat empty.
He discarded Campaign Card #18
Campaign Card #33 allowed the French army to plunder Naples. This dastardly action gave Charles 18 florins for his War Chest, bringing the French total to 27 florins but he lost 6 Victory Points.

The last we heard of the Venetian 1st Army was they were in the area of Ferrara. Well the Genenral of this army decided to lay siege to the City. Oh Dear!!! He did not succeed. The Citizens and Soldiers of Ferrara put up a brave defense and sent the venetian General "packing".
This is how it happened. The Venetian general committed 50 florins of his army, giving him plus 5, he also gained a plus 1 as this was the first part of the siege: this gave him a total 6 to add to a dice roll of a D6, a 2 was rolled equaling 8 "Not bad he thinks. I have a chance to take this City".
Well it din't quite work out like that. The Citizens of Ferrara had plus 3 for the area, plus 2 for garrison, giving them a total of 5. this ment a 4 or more had to be rolled. The d6 was rolled and they throw a 6 giving them 11.
The Citizens and Soldiers of Ferrara jump for JOY, as they had repulsed half the Venetian army. "Now the Citizens hold a Holiday on this Day".
The Venetians lost half their army in this siege.
The last bit of news we heard, is that a messenger as just arrived at the Venetian camp, ordering the Venetian General back to Venice, as the Doge and The Council of Venice would like a little Chat with him! Remember Venice was a Republic.
Some consolation though, camapign card #21 gave them extra Influence Chits and Campaign Card #31, Spanosh Disease, ment the Spainish had to give up 2 Influence Chits. Leaving them with none.RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4046491871051396918.post-68293176978572869312010-01-30T08:11:00.006+10:002010-02-03T12:22:49.876+10:00Extra! Extra! Read All About It! Italian Campaign BeginsScot and I have now commenced the Italian War Campaign and I must say that I enjoy trying to work out Scots next moves. So far the situation is as follows:

Scot represents France and Venice, yours truly represents Spain and The Papal States.

France A1 army of 120 florins under the command of the French King is based in Naples, A2 Army recruited in France and now marched onto Nice. (No doubt enjoying the Sunny climate)
Venetain A1 army of 59 florins is based in Venice, A2 army of 41 florins commenced the campaign in Ravenna and as now moved to Pasaro.
Papal A1 army of 72 florins under the command of Prospero Colonna a condottiero, mustered his army in Rome and as now moved onto Terni.
Spain A1 army 82 florins under the command Fernando d' avalos, Marquess of Pescara landed at Cosenza and as now marched onto Barletta.
The Spanish army draw a Campaign card denoting a plague in the region. On a throw of 5-6 a plague breaks out but fortunatly the Spanish commander throw a 2 "Phew"
The Papal Commander picked up a Russe de Guerre card with a Fabian Tactic which means my Papal General may avoid having a battle forced on him until the start of the next campaign phase.
Let me say "For those who wish to follow the campaign, why not get out a map of Italy and track Scots and my movements".
Campaigns are not everyones "Cup of Tea" but I find them challanging, in trying to out wit ones opponant and reading the Historical aspects of the period.
Now I'm waiting for Scot to make his next move(s).RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4046491871051396918.post-41006981489086470602010-01-15T19:25:00.003+10:002010-01-15T20:17:53.952+10:00First Trail Game for Italian WarsGoodevening to you all, just a short post. Today, Scot and I played a trail game in preparation for our Italian War Campaign. The game was for the soul purpose to get an idea of the "Piquet" Rule set "Band of Brothers". We may have made some minor errors, having not played them on a regular bases before but when all is said and done, we both had a very good game. I dont know about everyone else but the more I get used this game mechanism the more I enjoy playing these rules. You either hate or love "Piquet", as for me, the more I play "Piquet" the more I'm able to gain an understanding of the philosphy that underpins this system. This is coming from someone who in the past did not wish to play them. Iam no expert yet in how to use the rules to benefit the armies I game with but given time I should beable to hold my own with the more experienced players.
Ho! by the way, Scot won the game, his Gendarmes performed very well on the day. No! it was not an easy victory for him, he had to work hard to win, especially when he had to take on 1 unit of Household Cavalry and 2 units of Heavy Lancers. I apologise to all those readers expecting photographs, only there was no camera available (The Newspaper people, forgot to pack it hA!). Scot has very kindly given me some Landsknecht Pike and Arqurebusiers, these will look good form either my papal guard or a Landsknecht pike block, once again Thanks Scot! and thanks Russ for lending me your figures for the day.
We are now ready to start the campaign, so when Scot and I set a date, I shall commence writing up the background on events and I do hope the "Newspaper people brink the camera Ha!". "What you my ask were Scots Units like?" I can sum in one word "Fantastic!!!!" and with that I shall sign off.RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4046491871051396918.post-4595618953701034562010-01-11T17:49:00.004+10:002010-01-11T18:35:15.070+10:00Up and coming "Pike and Plunder Italian War Campaign"Before I continue with the news, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone who reads my Blog sight "A Happy New Year" with plenty of gaming. Now for the news, yes! I know it as been a long time since I put fingers to the Key Board, only I have been busy painting figures, for the Itallian Wars, Franco-Prussian War, World War 1 Russians etc; etc;
At this moment in time it will be Scott and me playing the Campaign. Scott will represent France and Venetian States, as for me I shall represent the Spanish and Papal States. The Rules for the campaign are "Pike and Plunder, Wargames Campaign Rules for the Italian Wars Version 2" by James Roach. I purchased these rules in 2009, for a princly sum of 5 Pounds, I must say a bargain. Having studied them they are well structured and easy to follow. The rules for the Table top gaming are "Piquet Master Rule Set" by Bob Jones and "Band of Brothers 1200-1600 A.D 2nd Edition" by Peter Anderson and Ken Baggaley. These Rules are what Scot and I will be using but I see no problems if a gamer wishes to substitute anothor set of Table Top Rules covering the Late Medieval Period.
Scot has been busy painting figures, Pike and cavalry units etc; the finished figures I shall get to see this coming Friday 15th when we will have a game. If I know anything about Scot's standard of painting, they will be Magnificent! It will also give Scot a chance to the Map of Italy, which I have had enlarged and laminated.
So! for those who wish to get into this colourful period, then I recommend you visit James Roach's Blog Sight "Pike And Plunder", where you will see photographs of his figures, gain an insight to the Italian Wars, plus read some very interesting Senarios.
In the future I shall be posting the progress on the Campaign and poblish photographs of the Battles.RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4046491871051396918.post-83239635142969303032009-09-22T22:58:00.006+10:002009-09-28T14:07:56.097+10:00I'm Back.! "Zulus Knocking at the Door"
Hi! Everyone, it's been a long time since I posted anything on the sight, yes I know it's remiss of me but I have not done much gaming lately. It fact, as you will see, this Zulu game is the first game that I have played since the Franco-Prussian game in June.

So last Saturday the 19th Russ and I played a very enjoyable game of British fighting off a Zulu attack, you mind say somewhat simmular to "Rorke's Drift". The above photo shows the Zulus knocking on the front and side doors. The Zulus at the front door ended up depleted and being pushed back.

This is a another view of this part of the battlefield. As I said this unit of Zulus suffered heavy casualties and were pushed back. I this was the player in command of the Zulus, ME, holding the world record on the night for rolling Ones! Note the Catling gun and figures, these belong to Russ that he purchased from Front Rank miniatures. The detail on the gun and miniatures are the quality one gets with Front Rank.

In this photo the British have build a wall from mealie bags. As with the Catling gun, this piece of the scenery was supplied by Russ. The unit behind the bags fought off two Regiments of Zulus

Before the game I took a photo of the rules. Let me say, if you want a set of rules that not only reflect colonial warfare but give you FUN then "Sword and the Flame" are for you. The game we had was the first time we played using this set of rules, we both found them not only easy to use but gave Russ and I heaps of laughs!! Russ (British) thought he would get over run but the rules for all their simplicity in the end balanced everything out. So in future when Russ and I play colonial we will be using these rules as well as "Piquet"

Two photos of showing two Zulu regiments rushing up to take on the British. Remember, in the film "Zulu", Michael Cain formed the firing line to plug a gap. As the early morning sun ascents into the skies above, the Wurtembergers are about to step off to confront the French at the "Battle of Worth" or the "Battle of Froeschwiller". The battle took place on the 6th August 1870. The French were under the command of Marshal MacMahon, the Prussians under the command of H.R.H the Crown Prince of Prussia. The main protagonists on the day, were the Bavarians, Wurtembergers, Hesse, Nassu and Saxe-Weimers.
There was no actual plan for the battle, the Prussians just happened to collide with the French, while the French were taken by surprise. A some what typical type of battle in the early stages of the Franco-Prussian War.
For this game I featured the attack of the Wurtembergers and a brigade of Bavarians around the town of 'Worth'.
"Command Pique" were the rules used on the day of the game.
On conclusion of the game we discussed the strength and weakness of the rules. One main critisisum was the slow movment of the units, put down, that there were not enough monvement cards in the packs. The answer may lay in the fact, that we did not use these card effectively. Another comment by a player, was that the rules did not provide the player with a chance to manuvar. This I doubt, because the players who had the cavalry were able to move their units around the flanks. Another comment was, "The cards run the game" yes they do, but this is to give the "Fog Of War". For gamers who enjoy the sequence, "you move I move" then "Pique" is not for them.
These rules provide the author with the ablity to think and not be able to counter an opponants moves as in "you move I move". Remember, Generals today have a great deal of technology on hand to assist them in achieving their goal, where as in the periods that the majority of use play, generals did not have such technology and had to rely on their natural skills. I feel that to game these rules one must take time to understand them.

No2. This brigade of Dragoons were on the left supporting the Wurtmbergers. As the progressed this brigade came to blows with 2 French Cuirassier Regiments. My time as been spent painting Franco-Prussian War Foundry figures and preparing the terraine for the up and coming scenario, the Prussian left flank attack against the the French position on a ridge out side the town of Worth. I have not included the river that actually runs through Woth, as I have yet to see if I have enough river segments to run the full length of the table. If I dont, I shall not worry, as it did not seem to impead the Prussian attack.
The game will take place this coming Saturday, 27/06/09. I will give a brief outline of the actual battle on the weekend, so stay "tuned". The 2 photos represent the town of Worth, I have placed a factory on the outskirts of the Town, just to give an Industrial effect. The Model is a office and engine shed model kit, the chiminy stack is an off cut of PVC Piping (those off cuts, do come in handy). The Town itself was in the centre of the Prussian Line. The first photo is taken looking along the trench.

This is the back of the same trench, taken from behind the command post. The materials I used were, cardborad and clay for the banks. Sand and cat litter, giving the rough effect to the banks. Lollypop sticks were used for the roof of the command post and for the decking. The sacks are from "Green stuff" from "Wargames Workshop". I have yet to add more features, like barbed wire, boxes representing ammunition etc. In the third photo are "Old Glory Figures" painted to represent Japanese Infantry in the "Russo-Japanese War" of 1904>05. I have painted them in their blue summer uniform, in the back ground is a squadron of Japanese cavalry. I've yet to paint more figures, which are on my paint table, all undercoated and ready for the paintbrush. I rather like these figures for their animation. The flags I made myself.
This Conflict saw extensive use of deep trenchworks, artillery, barbed wire and machineguns. The observers from other Nations didn't seem to learn any lessons.
So, I'm slowly preparing for the time when I can field both sides in order to game this period.
RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4046491871051396918.post-13060496049592796972009-03-22T17:22:00.000+10:002009-07-03T17:31:38.222+10:00Battle of "Toledo"
As promised, the report on the game that Russ and I played last sunday. Placing the Cavalry figues on the Fenlon brand of horse makes them look good. I have started on painting 3 more infantry units, by this rate, I hope to have all the Japanese painted with in 4 to 5 months. If I don't have time to paint the Russians I intend to use my World War 1 Russian Figures. You may say, that the uniforms may not be the same, well the cut of the Russian uniform did not change much only the colour, which eventialy changed from White and green to that of Karki. I shall post photos of the Japanese units in the next day or two.RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4046491871051396918.post-33727640644195933882009-02-24T20:15:00.001+10:002009-03-03T19:29:39.764+10:00Mahdis Take On the Brits As I promised I have posted the photos of the game that we played on the 22 Feb. The players were Scott and Russ, British, Kevin and yours truly Mahdis. The British objective was to take the village, which had been occupied by a small force of Mahdis. This little "band" were supported by two "Brigades" of Mahdis placed behind the village. The first photo shows the Mahdis in the village. The commander is in on the roof of the house in the back ground.

Camel riders, which, as the game progressed were unlucky enough to come up against British cavalry. If my memory serves me correctly, in one episode, he wears the uniform that he wore in the Suden campaign. It wasn't until about 1881 that the Kakhi uniform began to be introduced as the standard British uniform and then they were still wearing scarlet in the early stages of the "Boer War". Incidently I have read that the scarlet tended to fade to brown.

Cavalry unit in the top of the photo got as far as the centre of the Table. The rule set we played with was "Command Piquet" by Brent Oman. These Rules are not everyones "cup of tea" especially for the majority of us gamers who are used to "you move I move" rules and are used to thinking in a linear mode. as for Me I find them some what refeshing.
It was an enjoyable day, made even better, because I had a victory over Scott. Once again many Thanks toScott and the rest of fellows for a day well spent.
Next, will be the report on the "El Cid" game that Russ and I intend to play in about two weeks time.RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4046491871051396918.post-74597295960957471102009-02-23T11:18:00.000+10:002009-03-11T15:25:22.286+10:00Medieval Scenics

It has been some time since I have posted anythink, so I thought I will display a few photos of my Medieval figures. as I said at the very beginning this is one of the periods I enjoy gaming. The photos represent a small village at the edge of a Desert. I was going to use this village as a back drop to a future Crusade game, using the suppliment "El Cid" from War Hammer Historical but I have changed my mind and set up a small village, somewhere in Europe in its place. I will post the new layout before the actual game, which may be in 3 weeks time.
The figures are from Mirliton Miniatures which is an Italian company, who produce some very fine miniatures. As you can see, these figures are from their "Diaroma" sets, this group is the the "Black Smith" shop. The Building is from "Conflex".

A Knight taking the blessing from the Town's Priest, before setting off to seek his fortune. The order was for 30 infantry and 10 cavalry. They are in the blue uniform they wore during the Boxer Uprising and continued to wear into the Russian-Japanese War of 1905. If anyone saw the film "55 Days At Peking" they would have seen the Japanese Colonal in the film wearing the Blue undress uniform. During the winter months they wore Khaki and inorder to keep warm in winter I believe the infantry wore the blue coat under their Khaki coat.
I intend to paint some units in Blue and some in Khaki, hoping to give the impression that the winter uniforms have not got through to all the infantry in the field. The Russains I intend to do the same some in Khaki and some in their famous white and green uniforms.
These figues will be the first, towards building both the Russian and Japanese Armies in preparartion for gaming the Russian-Japanese War.
If anyone is interested in this period then there is a Russo-Japanese Society on the Web. that covers all aspects of this campaign, well worth a visit. There is some good reading in The Tsar's Last Armada by Constantine Pleshakov. A detailed account of the Russian Fleet sailing from their Home port in the Baltic, through to the South China Sea, only to meet the Japanese Fleet at the Battle of Tsushima. Come to think of it, it was a remarkable feat and don't forget "Rising Sun And Tumbling Bear"
Now I have to wait for the post so I can start painting.RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4046491871051396918.post-39645718518626257702009-01-26T18:02:00.000+10:002009-01-26T18:38:50.835+10:00General "Blinky" Scott or "Mind that Tooth Pick"

Photo of General "Blinky" Scott avoiding a rather large tooth pick.

Players on the day
Scott other wise known as General "Blinky"
Russ alias "Wait for me"
and Me, Robert "Where's me cuppa tea"

Rules commenced with "Din of Battle" finished with "Command Piquet".

Out come: A draw.

I had a very enjoyable day and I,m looking forward to the next Colonial game at Scotts in Febuary. The idea came from James Roach who is auther of a very good Blog sight, by the Title of "Pike and Plunder". This sight covers the English Civil War and many other encounters from Italian Wars through to the Thirty Year Wars. I highly recommend that you visit it some time. I always find that, what makes this hobby interesting, apart from gaming and the Historical aspects of course, is the willingness for Gamers to share their ideas.
Now the assembly. The top photo is how the flag looks on the metal tube.
The second and third show the size of the tube and thickness of the wire. The fourth shows the wire. The final photo is the flag before it is glued around the tube.
The tube and the wire I obtained from the local hobby shop.
So you can now keep replacing your flags should you wish to have your troops change "sides".

RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4046491871051396918.post-41257515694432402442009-01-12T10:08:00.000+10:002009-01-12T11:30:12.405+10:00British "Colonial" Cavalry, Painted by Mark Temple
RFletcherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09434096837788862287noreply@blogger.com1
